The Camellia hiemalis 'Kanjiro', also known as 'Hiryu', is a magnificent Japanese beauty with masses of large, single to semi-double, rich cerise blossoms. The flowers are delicately shaded paler at the center and the base of the petals, which gives the appearance of a central stripe. The Kanjiro Camellia is a hybrid plant developed by crossing two species - the Camellia sasanqua and the Camellia japonica. The particular variety called 'Kanjiro' was bred in Japan by the firm, E. Takii & Co. and it was released in 1954.

The peony-form flowers are dark pink, rose-red and red, and are speckled, blotched and splashed with white variegation in different patterns on the petals. Some strains will present darker red or lighter pink with the white variegation. The "Daikagura is an ancient Japanese cultivar of Camellia japonica, registered in 1891. It's known for its early blooming and is a traditional masterpiece in the Seattle Japanese Garden.
